Vernonburg is a town in Chatham County, Georgia, about 10 miles south of downtown Savannah. It is located at a sharp curve along the Vernon River, a tidal creek. The population was 122 at the 2010 census. Vernonburg was first settled by German craftsmen in the mid-18th century (hence the German suffix -burg), and was incorporated in 1748. By the early 19th century, the town was becoming a summer community for wealthy Savannahians. Then as now, it was linked to downtown Savannah by White Bluff Road, the 19th-century extension of Bull Street. Today Vernonburg is an attractive residential village with large homes and beautiful landscaped gardens.

Vernonburg is part of the Savannah Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Vernonburg is located at (31.967361, -81.12073)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²), of which, 0.4 square miles (0.9 km²) of it is land and 2.70% is water. Vernonburg mainly consist of a small stretch of river front properties along a section of the Vernon river.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 138 people, 59 households, and 47 families residing in the town. The population density was 380.4 people per square mile (148.0/km²). There were 69 housing units at an average density of 190.2 per square mile (74.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.10% White, and 2.90% from two or more races.

There were 59 households out of which 20.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.6% were married couples living together, 3.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% were non-families. 18.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.60.

In the town the population was spread out with 17.4% under the age of 18, 2.2% from 18 to 24, 15.9% from 25 to 44, 36.2% from 45 to 64, and 28.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 52 years. For every 100 females there were 106.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $105,581, and the median income for a family was $153,670. Males had a median income of $100,000+ versus $11,563 for females. The per capita income for the town was $49,391. None of the population and none of the families were below the poverty line.
